Chuck. I ride daily, year around here in California. I've had the bike 2.5 years, I've got 62,000 miles on it. I am still on the original clutch, starter and battery. While I have had some trouble with fuel delivery, this bike has been very dependable. I ride 16 miles of suface street and 46 miles of freeway one way every day. I don't find wind to be a problem. I saw some 1/4 accerleration stats on the Savage and the Shadow VLX 600. Both bikes are not very fast. My neighbor rides a VLX. I borrowed it one day to run to the store. The VLX is smoother and that makes sense because it's a twin. It's also water cooled. I felt the VLX had a little more power but I still prefer my Savage. The Savage is less expensive to purchase and maintain. The Savage has no water pump or radiator fan to break. It has just one spark plug, one cylinder and the belt drive is maintenance free. The VLX is chain driven. I think both bikes are good looking but the extra cost of the VLX for a little bit more power doesn't justify it over the Savage in my opinion.
